Larry Ellison To Helm Oracle Racing Sailboat In America’s Cup Class Regatta

America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup Media LLC today announced that software magnate Larry Ellison will helm USA 49, Oracle Racing’s 2003 America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup training sailboat in the International America’s Cup Class (IACC) regatta that will be held on San Francisco Bay from May 25-26, 2002. Five IACC sailboats is expected on the starting line to vie for the inaugural Sausalito Cup that will create a sailing spectacle for those wanting to view these 80-foot sailboats in race action.

Ellison has been actively competing on the maxi sailboat racing circuit since 1995 and is presently campaigning Oracle Racing, Challenger to the America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup 2003, in Auckland, New Zealand. The Sausalito Cup is a three-day IACC regatta. The format is one buoy race on Friday evening May 24, one long Bay race on Saturday, May 25, finishing with two buoy races on Sunday, May 26.

"We’re pleased that Larry Ellison and his Oracle Racing team members will be participating in the Sausalito Cup as it demonstrates the growing support for IACCSF and big boat racing in the U.S.," said John Sweeney, founder of America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup Media LLC and event organizer. "This is the first time an IACC fleet of this size has raced together on San Francisco Bay, and it’s significant to have such a high caliber of sailing professionals racing here this weekend."

Other vintage IACC yachts participating in the Sausalito Cup include Italy 1, USA 11, NZL 14, and NZL 20. Italy 1 is a Frers Design IACC yacht built for the 1992 America’s Cup in San Diego and will be helmed by San Francisco venture capitalist, Peter Stoneberg. Both NZL 14 and NZL 20 are Farr Design sailboats also built for the 1992 America’s Cup. NZL 14 will be helmed by professional match-racer Ben Beer. David Thomson, global entrepreneur, will helm NZL 20. USA 11, formerly owned by Dennis Conner and known as Stars and Stripes is the latest addition to the IACC San Francisco fleet and will be helmed by John Sweeney, who sails on the Oracle Racing team. Stars & Stripes will be christened officially at the Sausalito Yacht Club following Saturday’s racing. The five yachts will be anchored at the Sausalito Yacht Club in downtown Sausalito over Memorial Day weekend where the public is welcome to view them.

IACCSF is a fleet of vintage International America’s Cup Class yachts based in San Francisco and managed by America’s Cup Media LLC. IACCSF organizes racing, manages restoration and provides sponsorship opportunities fostering appreciation of International America’s Cup Class yachts. It is the only organization of its kind in the world. An Advisory Board comprised of four owners and two sailing professionals governs IACCSF ; Paul Cayard represents the USA and Tommaso Chieffi of Italy represents Europe.
