A 22 ans, le Hawaïen John John Florence a remporté le classement final de la 2016 World Surf League lors du MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal disputé à Peniche. Il remporte son premier titre mondial et le rapporte à Hawaï 12 ans après la victorie d’Andy Irons.
Présent depuis 6 ans sur le circuit mondial, John John Florence s’était déjà fait remarquer par une 4e place au classement mondial en 2012 et un podium en 2014.
