Nantes - Azores 650
Nearly 70 pre-registrations just a month after the launch
30% of pre-registered non-french candidates for the 2006 race

Barely a month since the event’s launch at the Town Hall in Nantes on 12th September 2005, nearly 70 skippers have pre-registered their intention to participate in the race. Potential candidates must have a boat or are awaiting a mini that has been ordered or is under construction.
The list of pre-registered candidates reflects the various motivations : for a number of projects the Nantes-Azores race is an important stage in their participation in the Mini-Transat Mini-Transat #MiniTransat 2007, the qualification to which is assured by this race. For other racers that are familiar to the circuit or have already taken part in the Mini-Transat Mini-Transat #MiniTransat , the Nantes-Azores has an identity all of its own as a single-handed ocean race slotting into the summer season.
The traditional characteristics synonymous with mini events are much in evidence, with a semi-professional line-up and numerous amateur projects seeking to transcend their own capabilities through single-handed ocean racing. Several prototypes are also under construction and will be making their debut in ocean racing with the Nantes-Azores.
With close to 30% of pre-registered candidates being foreign, the Nantes-Azores, also promises to be a truly international event with British, Dutch, Belgian, Swiss, Portuguese, German and Australian participations.
Of the 66 pre-registered projects, nearly half of them are already fully registered. Of this latter group, around ten have already performed the necessary qualifier to take the start (1000 miles outside racing and 500 miles within racing) subject to participation in at least one race from the official 2006 circuit.
Finally the projects currently participating in the Mini-Transat are also likely to be another source of inscription, the Guide Mini rules stating that the qualified skippers (this is the case for the mini participation) have priority with the registration.
This flurry of sporting interest is indicative of the need for such an event, a need identified by the Classe 6.50. The Class has confided the organisation Organisation #organisation to Sirius Evénements, shouldered by the Town of Nantes, the APCC Voile Sportive and the Town of Horta, and supported by numerous leading media partners such as France Bleu Loire Océan, Ouest-France and Voiles et Voiliers Magazine.
The enterprises of Nantes and the Pays de La Loire region of France are also likely to take an active rôle in the project within the framework of the Enterprise Club established under the Nantes Métropole Développement.
