Areva and Le Défi partnership

Your reaction to the sponsoring of the French nuclear in Auckland

Thursday 17 January 2002Christophe Guigueno

On friday 11th, the members of Le Défi, the french team for the America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup 2003 have presented their new main sponsor: the group Areva, which includes Cogema and Framatome, two big nuclear companies.

Areva, civil nuclear company created by the french government, offers 15 millions Euros to Le Défi and, by the way, gives them enough money to be able to represent France in the Louis Vuitton Cup in… Auckland.

Auckland is not only the center of the sailing live in the world. Auckland has a long sad story with french nuclear. In 1985, the Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace’s fleet leader ship which was opposed to french nuclear tests in Mururoa, was sunk by the french secret services. One man, a photographer, was killed inside the boat.

Ten years after, the nuclear tests started again in Mururoa after Jacques Chirac election. This did create another diplomatic problem with countries of Pacific and was followed by an embargo in Australia and New Zealand against French products.
