This last day enjoyed epic conditions to decide the European Pro Junior Champion. Waves from 7 to 10 feet were on offer to the semi-finalists, and made possible to watch unique moments in surfing history. Those who remind the WQS’s conditions in April will be stunned when they ear that today surf Surf #Surf was even bigger and better.

Competition started at Supertubos at10h30, only with 3 surfers out, because Michel Bourez was waiting for his boards to arrive. He went in a few minutes later with a borrowed board. Hodei Collazo was taking to many chances and paid the price by snapping is board in two pieces, later he was punished by a giant set of 13 consecutive waves, he still tried to catch up, but it just wasn’t his day. Michel Bourez spent a lot of time inside Supertubos barrels, but didn’t come out of a single one. He was pulling in too deep. On the other hand, Aritz was tuned in with the waves and got 3 good barrels that earned him scores between 7,67 and 8,9 points. Luis Rodriguez also found a good one in the end to secure a place in the final.

In the second semi-final, the barrels were not helping that much, so Raphael Ayme spent the entire heat looking for smaller waves to perform on. João Guedes also had trouble getting good ones, Gony went for bigger barrels but was successful only once, and Marlon only turned things around 15 seconds to the end, when he pulled in to a big one, came out clean and posted one more cutback followed by a front side snap. He scored a 9,6 points and mostly gained confidence for the final.

The final started under a giant set that lasted 4 minutes, and water mountains kept coming without any brakes. Marlon caught one of those, and his late takeoff put him in a situation of do or dies. Standing, he came out with the spray and responded to the crowd cheer putting a fist in the air. That was the only 10 points ride of the whole contest. Aritz heard, and immediately responded with a near perfect ride of 9,63 in a wave where he actually got covered twice. Luis Rodriguez and Gony Zubizarreta took their time to find clean good ones, but Gony got rewarded close to the end and secured 3rd place with it. The last minutes where exciting, as Aritz looked for an average score, in order to turn things around, and on two smaller waves got nice barrels once more. The judges were not impressed and he was forced to watch Marlon getting a last minute wave where he placed 2 backside snaps and a huge floater, to confirm the contest victory and the title.

Marlon came out of the water with his hands in the air celebrating and his friends immediately carried him on their shoulders while the huge crowd applauded.

Marlon thought he was dreaming : ”I feel like crying, I just can’t believe I won and just took the title in these waves conditions. That barrel, I only fell to myself when they announced the score, then Aritz came back, and we had to battle until the end, I’m stoked.”

This Rip Curl Pro Junior will go down in history as the closest and biggest battle for the junior title. The epic surf Surf #Surf conditions, under which this Rip Curl Pro Junior was held, just make it huge for Aritz and Marlon who chased the win up to their human limits.

The German but Portuguese based Marlon Lipke, has earned a title that motivates him for other achievements : “next year I will take part on the WQS tour full time, and hope to qualify for the WCT sooner or later”. With any justice still left in the world we will see Marlon dropping Pipeline just like he did it here at Supertubos, but first another challenge is in place, the world junior championships, which only great names have made, such as Andy Irons and Joel Parkinson. This important event had support of Peniche City Hall, and co-sponsor Nokia. Suzuki also takes part on this event, as PlayStation2. Marlon also took home a new PlayStation2 for his 10-point ride. What a way to end a tour...
