After seven days of grueling wave and race world cup action here in at the Labello, Sylt, PWA, 2003 Grand Slam, the wind has finally turned offshore and died. With ten races and a full men and women’s double elimination wave competition in the bag this years 20th anniversary event will no doubt be remembered as one of the most exciting in PWA history. The superb German organization, raging parties and massive crowds have all added to the huge success of this year’s event, which concluded this afternoon with the prize giving ceremony on the Sylt promenade.

Yesterdays explosive wave double elimination finals saw Hawaiian wave specialist, Josh Angulo secure the overall wave title after he won a crucial battle against ex world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Neil Pryde) of Andorra. Angulo then went on to face the 2002 wave champion Kevin Pritchard (Gaastra, Starboard) in the decider for the event victory but was defeated in the second of two sensational finals. In the men’s overall title race Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Neil Pryde) finished the year in second slot with Norwegian wild flyer Vidar Jensen (North) taking third and Matt Pritchard (Gaastra) fourth.

Few have ridden the rollercoaster of life as a professional wave sailor as radical as Josh Angulo. With a flick of his ever tweaked tail in Germany, he turned the light on for a bright future in wave sailing as one of its true style masters finally received just reward for his craft.

In the women’s waves Daida Moreno (Mistral, North) continues her domination in the on the women’s tour making it four years in a row as world overall champion after defeating Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) in the women’s final in yesterdays tough conditions. Jaggi finished the year in second position overall with Iballa Moreno (Mistral, North) taking third and Nayra Alonso of Spain taking fourth.

In the men’s racing Antoine Albeau (AHD, Neil Pryde) has dominated the proceedings here in Sylt after taking four wins out of the ten races and winning the event with a decisive margin. Ross Williams (Gaastra, Starboard) of Britain sailed brilliantly here in Sylt to pick up second overall with Polish racer Wojtek Brzozowski (Neil Pryde, Starboard) clinching third. Meanwhile the battle for the overall title between Micah Buzianis (Mistral, North) and Brzozowski (Neil Pryde, Starboard) was a nail biting affair with Buzianis clinching the victory by the narrowest of margins. Third place in the men’s overall rankings was taken by Albeau (Neil Pryde, AHD) with Kevin Pritchard (Gaastra, Starboard) securing fourth and Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Neil Pryde, Starboard) of Argentina taking fifth.

Today’s prize giving along the Sylt promenade concluded this years event in style with over ten thousand spectators turning up to watch the event and 2003 champions crowned. The battle for the PWA freestyle tour will be decided at the closing event of the season on the sun drenched beaches of Bonaire in December where Robby Swift (Neil Pryde, JP) and Ricardo Campello (Neil Pryde, JP) will fight it out for the title.
