• Match 2 : Star and Stripes beats Wight Lightning by 20"

Racing started in a shifty seven knot southerly that clocked to the southwest and built in strength to 15 knots during the afternoon.

Stars and Stripes fought for and got the left side of the course at the start while their rival, Wight Lightning, split and sailed out to the right.

The British boat on the right-of-way starboard tack signaled a protest when they crossed tacks a few minutes later as the Americans narrowly passed ahead of Wight Lightning. On-the-water umpires disallowed the protest.

Read and his crew of America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup veterans fought off at least five determined attempts by the British sailors who are returning to America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup racing for the first time in 15 years.

At the turning mark leading to the final run to the finish, the Americans staved off Wight Lightning, which had pulled within six seconds. The boats were only half a length apart as they rounded the mark and set spinnakers.

- Ken Read : "We haven’t sailed against another boat for over a month and it was great to get out there and start racing again. The British crew did a nice job keeping their boat close but in the end we prevailed. We don’t always make it pretty but somehow we figure a way to win and that’s all that matters."

• Match 3 : Oracle BMW Racing bat Luna Rossa de 42"

The match between Luna Rossa and Oracle started at 12.45 local time. Luna Rossa started on the far right of the line with a two seconds advantage, while Oracle was on the opposite tack at the far left. During the first windward leg the two boats split on opposite tacks and later came close to each other near the mark where Oracle rounded with a 15 second advantage. Luna Rossa closed the gap slightly during the first downwind leg. The following two legs saw Oracle again moving ahead to windward and Luna Rossa catching up downwind. At the last rounding before the final downwind leg, Oracle was leading by 47 seconds. Luna Rossa gained a few seconds during the last leg but crossed the finish line 42 seconds behind Oracle.

• Match 4 : OneWorld bat Mascalzone Latino de 5’43"

OneWorld, The Seattle based Challenge for the 2003 America’s Cup won its first race of the Louis Vuitton Cup today against the Italian syndicate, Mascalzone Latino (ITA 72). The first race got underway this afternoon under overcast skies, with a 10-12 knot south-westerly breeze and shifty conditions.

Skipper, Peter Gilmour, handed the helm to James Spithill and he showed his prowess on the start, boxing Italian helmsman Paolo Cian out from the pin end of the line, before crossing well ahead of ITA 72. USA 67 pointed higher and sailed faster than the Italian counterpart, eventually rounding the first windward mark with a 1:14 lead. That combination of speed and pointing ability proved hard to beat, and the OneWorld team went on to win their first race by 05:43.

- Peter Gilmour, Skipper of OneWorld Challenge : "James did a fabulous job on the start, we were going the right way with ITA 72 behind us. The start makes such a big difference in these boats. The race really was all over with a minute to go before the start gun."
