GBR challenge beat Le Défi

Coutts got the better over his old team mates in a capturing race. At the start Barker was surprised by Coutts who lead him to believe that he had taken the initiative only to arrive at the start in perfect time. Team Alinghi were ahead by two lengths at the arrival of the first buoy. On the downwind side the advantage remained the same despite slight problems in the opening of the gennaker of the Swiss team. At the second buoy Barker tried to mark his opponent but Coutts controlled the race perfectly not leaving his opponent any chance. Team Alinghi beat team New Zealand with a 25 second margin.
This is the first time that the two have raced against each other as opponents after their victory together over Luna Rossa in the last edition of the America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup . In fact, it was Ernesto Bertarelli who divided their destines when in the year 2000 he launched his Swiss challenge to the America’s Cup America's Cup #AmericasCup and signed up Russel Coutts to his team. It took the waters of Trieste to have the honour to see this historic race in the Omega Seamaster Cup.
With the driving rain and lack of wind even today’s programme was delayed. In fact, the international jury who is governed by Luciano Giacomi decided to modify the formula, the races will no longer be in the best of three races but just one race.
First in the water was the Le Defi Areva team who raced against GBR Challenge of Andy Beadsworth. The English team went ahead and at the first buoy had a ten second advantage. With the increasing wind GBR challenge went on to win by a 45 second margin.
The second race was spectacular. Dean Barker reached the first buoy with a thirty second advantage. The Outlaw team put pressure on Barker forcing him off mark at the second buoy. This move caused the team New Zealand to follow, Law did not mark the New Zealanders and he went on to try to find extra wind, the New Zealanders went for the straight line and managed to win.
Tomorrow in programme are the last of the match races between ( GBR Challenge v Outlaw, GBR Challenge v Alinghi, Team Alinghi v Le Defi Areva, Outlaw v Alinghi, Team New Zealand v Le Defi Areva) The semi finals will go ahead on Friday and Saturday. The final will take place on Sunday starting from 11 am, it will be disputed in a best of five race mode.
