Over 100 racers have gathered here at Leba on the Northern coast of Poland for the first PWA race event of the season. The sponsors ERA, have been hosting Formula races in Poland over the past few years but this is the fist time they have stepped up to supporting a PWA higher profile and prestige level of competition.

The day started off very well with the first women’s heats but then all of a sudden the wind turned offshore and very gusty just before the women’s semi final. The head judge decided to put up the AP flag, a red and white banner indicating that the competition is on stand by.

Staring out of the window from the Hotel overlooking the spot the sailors all thought that the wind was not as good as usual down at Sotavento beach but we were… WRONG.

Head judge Klaus Michel pointed out at the 10 a.m. skippers meeting important issues such as competition area, duration of the heats and the new system of using a launching area where the riders have to present themselves before their heat.

We are back in action here at the Gran Canaria PWA 2002 Grand Slam. This afternoon the wind picked up enough to allow ten heats of the fourth round of freestyle to be completed. By 5.30pm conditions became too gusty to continue and competition was abandoned.
